Old Town, Dubrovnik, Croatia

I never knew about the country of the Republic of Croatia until recently. Croatia is located in Central Europe – on the right side of Adriatic Sea is a democratic parliamentary republic. They expect to join the European Union with full membership in July 2013. We visited Dubrovnik – a city on the Adriatic Sea coast of Croatia. They will continue to use their own currency, the Croatian Kuna, until they become a EU member.

Dubrovnik has been listed as a UNESCO’s World Heritage Site since 1979. It became a popular tourist destination in the late 19th century, and today, many cruise ships bring around 1 million passengers yearly to visit this beautiful medieval-walled city. The approximately 2 km (1.25 miles) long, uninterrupted famous city walls surround the old city and reach 25 meters (82 ft) tall. It was used to protect the city from its enemies, but today is a must see when you visit Croatia.

There are lots of things you can see and experience besides the walls. There are a number of shops and restaurants to visit. There are also many churches and museums to visit in this completely pedestrian-only old city and are small enough to get around on foot. Most of the museums are not free, though. We went to Church of St Ignatius built between 1667 and 1725, the Dubrovnik Cathedral, and other buildings. The City Harbor is also worth a visit; it has been in use since the late 15th century. We had lunch at Bistro Teatar, and the food was fairly decent, but they charged us extra money (for sitting outside?). We could not figure out why due to the language barrier.

If you have time, I would suggest going to the mountain/hill outside they. You will discover the magnificent view of the whole city with its orange roofs. The most convenient way to reach here is taking the cable car from Down station to Mountain Srđ. You will have a great view of the city.
