Greek Amphitheater (Teatro Greco), Taormina, Sicily, Italy

This is the most beautiful amphitheater I have ever seen. This ancient theater sits atop a hill and provides a panoramic view of the beautiful blue Ionian Sea and Mount Etna. We were lucky to see the snow covering the top of Mount Etna and smoke coming out of the volcano. It is a photographer's dream especially on a clear day.

This theater was believed to be built originally by the Greeks and then Romans transformed it for the gladiator fights / sporting shows from the 2nd century AD and survived as we see it today. Today, it is the 2nd largest theater in Sicily. The theater and cavea were cut out of the rocky slope of Mount Tauro. There are only few white marble columns, and the red bricks left behind still adorn the stage. It can be used for concerts, stage plays, and the like. Due to its unique location, Teatro Greco has many artistic and cultural events in the summer. Below is a short list:

Taormina Arte - June/July/August
Taormina Film Festival - June
Madonna della Rocca - September

We only had one day to visit Taormina. After we visited the Corso Umberto, we came to this ancient hillside amphitheater. It is worth the money to see this beautiful theater. You can imagine the scenes when you sit down and see the show with panoramic view backdrop of splendid presence of Mount Etna on the right and the coastline on the left. I admire the ancient Greeks who found the perfect location to build such a theater and allowed us a chance to enjoy it. This is the reason why it is so popular today.
