The Spanish Steps (Scalinata della Trinità dei Monti) are situated between Piazza di Spagna and the Trinità dei Monti church. The 138 wide staircases were built between 1723 and 1725. Normally, there are lots of people sitting on the steps. You can chat and take a rest on the steps; however, eating food is prohibited. Sometimes it may be difficult to find a way to pass through crowd to reach the church on top of the steps. It is best to visit in the spring when it is decorated with azaleas and the temperature is pleasant. When you visit Spanish Steps, you can also visit the Trinità dei Monti church and Villa Medici on the top and the Fontana della Barcaccia (Fountain of the Old Boat) just below the Spanish Steps. The shape of the fountain is a half-sunken boat to represent a bad flood in 1598, and a boat was left in the square after the flood.
The Spanish Steps were designed by Italian architect Francisco de Sanctis upon the request of Pope Innocent XIII. He presented a design that satisfied both the French and the papacy. The Fontana della Barcaccia was designed by Pietro Bernini and his son Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Gian Lorenzo Bernini was also the creator of the well-known baldachin of St. Peter's Basilica and the famous Fountain of the Triton.
The Spanish Steps is one of the most magnificent urban historic sites of Roman Baroque style. In the Renaissance period, it attracted artists and writers alike and was full of elegant hotels, inns and residences. When you visit this wonderful site, you can feel the atmosphere of art.
