The Vatican Museums was started by Pope Julius II (1503-1513) as a group of sculptures collection and placed in what today called the Cortile Ottagono inside the museum. The Vatican Museums are a complex of different pontifical museums and galleries that began under the patronage of the popes Clement XIV (1769-1774) and Pius VI (1775-1799). One of the most well known at Vatican museums is the Sistine Chapel. The ceiling painting is incredible and the “The Last Judgement” by Michelangelo covers the wall behind the altar in the Sistine Chapel. Another impressive masterpiece is the Gallery of Maps. It is a gallery located on the west side of the 3rd floor of Belvedere Courtyard containing 40 huge and highly accurate topographical maps of the whole Italy by friar Ignazio Danti between 1580 and 1585. You certainly will not miss the fantastic ceiling painting along with those maps.
