You can walk from the Barberini Fontana di Trevi metro station for about 1.4 km to the Pantheon. It is one of the well kept ancient Roman temples. Pantheon means temple consecrated to all gods. It is located on the Piazza della Rotonda. You cannot miss the Fontana del Pantheon in front of the Pantheon. It is always full of people inside and outside of the temple. Be aware of the pickpocketing when visiting the crowded attractions.
The Pantheon was built in around 126 AD. The temple was rebuilt several times, and it has been in continuous use till today. In the 7th century, it was used as a Roman Catholic Church - St. Mary and the Martyrs. In the Renaissance era, the Pantheon had been used as a tomb, and even there were two kings buried in the Pantheon in recent history.
The building is quite unique with its portico consisted of three rows of eight columns in the front and four columns in the 2nd and 3rd rows each. Each column is about 12 meters high and 1.5 meters in diameter with a weight of 60 tons. Inside the temple, the huge dome has a span of 43.3 meters. On top of the dome is the oculus. The height to the oculus and the diameter of the interior circle are the same of 43.3 meters. The concrete dome is the largest unreinforced dome in the world. The oculus at the top of dome and the entry door are the only sources of natural light to the interior. The sunlight from the oculus creates a special effect - it moves around on the wall.
The Pantheon is open from 8:30 am to 7:30 pm Monday to Saturday, from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm on Sunday. The admission is free to public.
