Burano & Murano, Venice, Italy

The Burano and Murano islands of the Northern Lagoon are famous for their lace making and the glass blowing.

Burano

It is about 40 minutes by motorboat from Venice. Burano was a traditional fishing village. Brightly painted houses beautifully decorate this small and joyful village. It is said that the purpose of the colorful houses were so that the fishermen could easily find their homes when came back at night. Burano is well known for its lace marking, and Burano women still practice this craft today. If you still have room in your budget for souvenir purchases, you can consider picking up some tablecloths or dresses. We did buy a beautiful yellow tablecloth. You have to check carefully to see if it is, in fact, made in Burano. Many cheap products are imported or machine made. You may also spend your time in Burano visiting the 16th century church of San Martino and Lace Museum.

Murano

Less than 30 minutes by motorboat from St. Marks is Murano, which has been in the glass business for the past 1300 years. We visited a glass factory to view the masters of this delicate craft at work. The blow-glass demonstration really gave us the opportunity to understand how they make those gorgeous pieces of artwork. The Murano products of blow-glass mirrors, chandeliers, goblets and intricate works are renowned worldwide. Murano Beads are used on some brand name jewelry, and we bought a beautiful necklace. I was surprised to learn how glass can be formed into so many variety facets. Unfortunately, they do not allow you taking photos in the display rooms.
