Lamma Island, Hong Kong, China

Lamma Island (南丫島) is the 4th largest island located in the southwest of Hong Kong Island with an area of 13.85 km2 (3,422 acre) in Hong Kong. The Chinese name came from the shape of the island looks like the Y in English. The northern village is called Yung Shue Wan (榕樹灣), and the eastern village is called Sok Kwu Wan (索罟灣). Most of the residents live in Yung Shue Wan area.

We took the 10:30 ferry from Central Ferry Pier No. 4 next to the Hong Kong Observation Wheel. It was a 30 minute ride to the Yung Shue Wan. We saw three large chimneys when we were approaching the Yung Shue Wan. Later we learned it was the 2nd largest coal-fired power station in Hong Kong which was completed in 1978. It totally blew my mind to see such a polluting power plant on such a beautiful island. Yung Shue Wan and the Sok Lwu Wan are beautiful fishing ports. We planned to have fresh seafood before we left. We noticed there were some eagles flying when we got off the ferry. I was quite excited and got my camera ready. Because it was almost noon, we picked Sampan Seafood Restaurant (舢舨海鮮酒家) which had a terrace in front of the port. After we sat down, we saw tens of eagles flying overhead hunting fish. It was the first time I had a chance to take photos of eagles so close. I took over 150 photos of them. Our plan was to hike from Yung Shue Wan to Sok Kwu Wan. We went passed some shops and residential houses then reached a beautiful beach – Hung ShingYeh Beach (洪聖爺泳灘) at Hung ShingYeh Bay. We continued with the Lamma Island Family Walk and reached the Lamma Island Lookout Pavilion (南丫島景觀台). We could see the Hung ShingYeh Beach, the ugly power station and the beautiful coast of the island below. Following the trail, we approached the east side of the island and our destination - Sok Kwu Wan. There is a pavilion on the hilltop which is a perfect location to see the gorgeous Sok Kwu Wan and fishing port below. We ended up in the Sok Kwu Wan and headed back to Central Ferry Pier around 5 pm.

The hiking was not very difficult when we visited in mid January. The scene is beautiful with many natural environments. Be sure bringing your camera and telephoto lens. Visit one of the seafood restaurants and bring swimming gear if you would like to spend some time at the beach. Comfortable shoes and a hat is needed when walking on the trail. The total journey took us around 6.5 hours.
