Hong Kong Wetland Park (香港濕地公園) is located in the northern part of Tin Shui Wai (天水圍), New Territories. This 60 hectare (148 acre) Wetland Reserve was initially considered to have an ecological mitigation area (EMA) to balance the loss of wetlands due to the nearby new town development. The Hong Kong Wetland Park was opened to the public on May 2006.
Hong Kong is famous for its financial center and modern high rise buildings. Whether traveling for leisure or business, I have been to Hong Kong many times. Normally we will go to those attractions near city center. Honestly I never thought there is a wetland park not so far away from city center. We took the MTR West Rail Line (西鐵線) from East Taim Sha Tsui Station (尖東站) to Tin Shui Wai (天水圍) then transferred to the circular Light Rail #705 to Wetland Park Station. It took us around one hour to get there. Once we got off the train, we went directly to the entrance of the park. It was a short walk, and we saw a large amazing visitor center which has exhibition galleries, shops, theatre and restaurants. It also has an excellent view of the Wetland Reserve where we saw lots of water birds on a small island. One of the unexpected creatures we saw in the park was the huge Salt Water Crocodile named Pui Pui (貝貝) which is captured and moved to the park on August, 2006. There are several paths / walks that brought us to see and learn about the ecosystem of the wetland. In addition to the paths, three bird-watching hides (Riverside Hide, Fishpond Hide, and Mudflat Hide) provide bird lovers and photographers a perfect location to enjoy the wildlife. They also provides free telescopes and field guides on the bird hides. You can learn almost everything regarding the wetland at the Wetland Discovery Centre. The scene is also beautiful beside the ecosystem of the wetland.
The park is closed on Tuesday except for public holidays. It is better to check the weather before you go because it involves lot of outdoor activities. Comfortable shoes, sunburn protection and water is important when visiting the wetland. Don’t forget brining your camera and enjoy your stay in such a amazing wetland. It is better for you to reserve full half day here for an easy and educational visit.
