Heping Island Park (和平島公園) is located in Heping Island at north of Keelung. It is just at the mouth of the Keelung Harbor and IS only 7.5 km (4.7 mi) from Keelung Bus Station. Part of the Heping Island Park was closed due to the 2011 typhoon which destroyed the beach. The whole park reopened almost 7 years after the typhoon on August 4, 2018.
We drove from Taipei via National Highway 1. It took us less than 45 min to reach the site. Keelung streets in the old seaport area are quite narrow and not easy to park on the roadside if you want to stop on the way to Heping Island. We stopped at Chen-Pin Fishing Harbor (正濱漁港) and took some photos then went straight to the parking lot in front of the Heping Island Park. We went to the ticket office to purchase tickets and get the park leaflet. Unfortunately, they only had the Chinese version. We came here several times in the past, and the last time was exactly 9 years ago in 2009 with my friends Bill and Lin from USA. The area has bizarre rock formations similar to those we saw in the famous Yehliu Geopark (野柳地質公園) 21.5 km (13.4 mi) away. We chose to turn right and visited the park on the trail counterclockwise. First we went to the nearby outlook for the view of the inner sea bay with a small island (island in the island, 島中島) and rocks near the shore. The newly reopened Alabao Bay (阿拉寶灣) was closed due to the high tide. It is one of the best locations for sunrise. You need to book guided tours online to explore the Alabao Bay. We followed the circle trail up to the Scenic Pavilion (等嶼亭). It is a perfect place to see the Keelung Islet (基隆嶼) and surrounding terrain of sea abrasion, such as the sea cliff, the abrasion platform and the famous bean curd rock.
They did not have the English leaflet yet when we visited on August 9, 2018. If you would like to get in to take a photo of the sunrise before it opens, then you need to go to their website to apply for permission. Besides the sightseeing, the park has a large seawater swimming pool. You can take the Bus 101 from Keelung City Bus Station (in front of Keelung Railroad Station) for about 30 min to reach Heping Island Park.
