Wulai, New Taipei City, Taiwan, ROC

Wulai (烏來) is a mountain district of New Taipei City located in northern Taiwan. Wulai is about 35 km (21.8 mi) from Taipei Station by car. Wulai district is the largest district in New Taipei City and is mostly in the mountains. It is also home to the third-largest indigenous group in Taiwan - Atayal (泰雅族). The name of Wulai also came from the Atayal phrase “kilux ulay” meaning "hot and be careful”.

Just like most of the great attractions near Taipei City, we have visited here many times. We drove a car from Taipei City heading to Xindian (新店) and then turned onto the Provincial Highway 9A. It is a 2-line winding mountain highway with many curves and some bridges. We parked in the parking lots near the Wulai Visitor Center next to Police Department, where we got the map for the area. Wulai is famous for its neutral sodium bicarbonate hot springs, and you can enjoy the hot springs in the facilities which range from luxury to public hot springs. Once you crossed the Tungho River (桶後溪) over a short bridge, you reach the famous Wulai Old Street. We normally have some local food here and look for some local handicraft decorations. Don’t miss the Wulai Atayal Museum (烏來泰雅民族博物館) right on the street. You can learn Atayal background and the history of the people. You need to cross a longer Lansheng Bridge (攬勝大橋) that crosses the Nanshi River (南勢溪) at the end of the old street. Once you are on the other shore of the river, you will find lots of hot springs hotels and facilities along the Hot Spring Street (溫泉街). You will eventually reach the location where you can see the amazing 80m (262 ft) Wulai Falls (烏來瀑布) if you follow the street toward the south. The trail is only 1.7 km (1.06 mi), and you can enjoy the scenery along the trail. You can continue your adventure by taking the gondola to the opposite side of the Yun Hsien Resort (雲山樂園). Yun Hsien Resort (雲山樂園) was badly damaged during the two severe typhoons in 2015. It may take years to recover, but you can still go there and wander around the nature of the mountain. The gondola ride probably the best way to admire the Wulai Falls.

When you come back from the gondola ride, you may want to go back to the Wulai Old Street area. I would suggest you take the Wulai Sightseeing Cart (a small cart used to be for transporting lumber). When people talk about Wulai, they normally mean the famous Wulai Old Street and Wulai Falls area. If you have more time, you can find quite a number of trails and waterfalls in Wulai area. The best way to go to Wulai for travelers without a car is taking MRT to Xindian Station and then taking Bus 849 in the front of the station. Yun Hsien Resort is still struggling for recovery as of end of 2017.
