Juming Museum, Jinshan, New Taipei City, Taiwan, ROC

Juming Museum (朱銘美術館) is located in the northeast Taiwan of Jinshan District, New Taipei City. It is about 48 km (30 mi) from Taipei Station by car. Juming was born in 1938 and started learning woodcraft from a famous master wood carver, Lee Chin-chuan (李金川), when he was a teenager. Later in 1976, Juming developed totally new sculpting works on the theme of Taichi (太極) and exhibited them at the National Museum of History (國立歷史博物館) in Taipei which earned him the title of one of the Ten Outstanding Youths of 1976.

Juming Museum is funded by Juming as a private museum and the largest outdoor museum in Taiwan. The location was originally used for storing his large sculptures, but later he decided to make it a place to display his collection of works. Juming was involved the design and execution of the museum during the entire construction period. It took 12 years to complete the museum, which opened to public in September 1999. The total area open to the public is 8 Hectare (27.2 Acre). There are indoor and outdoor exhibition areas. The spacious museum displays Juming's inspired works from 1987 to 1999. There are several areas for specific themes. Once you enter the site, you will see Service Center where you purchase your tickets with a gift shop and a restaurant, followed by a two-story exhibition building. Here you can see some works of domestic and overseas artists. Once you are outside the buildings, you start to discover all outdoor displays. The first one is the Living World Series which includes the amazing Parachute with its stainless steel umbrella. In Sport Square, you can find motor riding and other athletic items on display. Taichi Square occupies a large green lawn display of more than 30 Taichi works. Some of them are huge bronze artworks formed from a styrofoam mold. You can find the popular Single Whip and Taichi Arch here. The impressive stainless steel and bronze exterior Main Building displays most of Juming’s early wood sculptures. When you cross the Ai Bridge, you can see the one and only armed force theme with military figures and weapons made of bronze on the Living World Square.

It is an incredible place to visit. You may not see anything like it in any other places. We were lucky enough to visit it once during the nighttime. It definitely gives you a very different experience. It might open at night during the summer but not every night. You should go to their website to check for opening times.
