Cingjing Farm (清境農場, also known as Qingjing Farm) is located in Ren’ai Township of Nantou County at the center of Taiwan. Nantou County (南投縣) is the only landlocked county and is the second largest county of Taiwan. Nantou also has the 3,952m (12,966 ft) Yushan (玉山) - the highest mountain in Taiwan. Cingjing Farm is about 260 km (162 mi) from Taipei City by car. The 1,748 m (5,735 ft) high and 760 ha (1,878 acre) Qingjing Farm was established on February 20th, 1961 for retired servicemen/women and their dependents and is owned by the Veterans Affairs Council (VAC; 國軍退除役官兵輔導委員會) of Republic of China. Today, it is a popular destination for tourists.
We visited Cingjing Farm and nearby attractions more than five times and will come again in the near future. We drove from Taipei, and the last 31 km (19.3 mi) Provincial Highway 14 / 14A was a winding mountain road that requires caution, especially when passed over by the tourist coach. The view was excellent when driving on Provincial Highway 14 / 14A though. Normally we drive to the north of the parking lot (not so big) near the Sheep Castle (綿羊城堡) and go down from there. You can also take the bus (available on holidays and weekends) from the south parking lot at the Cingjing Farm Tourist Center (清境農場遊客休閒中心). The Cingjing Farm includes facilities and attractions such as the Tourist Center (shops and restaurants), Green Green Grasslands (青青草原), Small Swiss Garden (小瑞士花園), Cingjing Guest House (清境國民賓館), Guanshan Pastoral Areas (觀山牧區) and eight hiking trails. The latest addition is 1,200 m (3,937 ft) long, 2.5 m wide, and located 1700 ~ 2000 m (5,577 ~ 6,562 ft) above sea level – the Cingjing Skyline (清境高空觀景步道). This amazing skywalk really solves the problem of pedestrians walking on the highway, especially during the peak season when there are many cars, and provides a unique way for you to enjoy the amazing scenery of the Cingjing. Green Green Grasslands is the most popular attraction in the area. It is a large grassland and you can walk on the trails up to the north gate of the grassland. The famous sheep shearing show also held here almost daily. You can also hike the 250m (820 ft) Great Wall Trail (長城步道) on top of the Green Green Grasslands which offers a great view over the plains and mountains.
It is impossible to see all the beautiful surroundings in a single day. You should decide beforehand which attractions you want to see. It is best for you to stay overnight in the area and pick some hiking trails to discover the beautiful nature of Taiwan high mountains. Most people will visit the 3,275 m (10,745 ft) Wuling (武嶺) – highest paved road in Taiwan and Hehuanshan National Forest Recreation Area (合歡山森林遊樂區) which is 21 km (13 mi) from Cingjing if they stay overnight in the area.
