Kenting National Park, Pingtung, Taiwan, ROC

Kenting National Park (墾丁國家公園) is located in Pingtung County of southernmost Taiwan. It is one of the nine national parks in Taiwan. This 33,289 ha (82,259 acre) national park has 18,084 ha (44,687 acre) of land area and 15,206 ha (37,575 acre) of marine area, making it the most popular spot in Pingtung County. Kenting National Park was established on January 1, 1984 and is Taiwan's first National Park. The park is situated on the Hengchun peninsula (恆春半島) and includes the townships of Checheng (車城), Hengchun (恆春), and Manjhou (滿州) of Pingtung County (屏東縣).

Kenting National Park looks small when compared to some National Parks in other countries, but you need to spend few days here in order to discover all its variety of landscape, geology, flora and fauna. The park has a 70 km (43.5 mi) amazing coastline on its three sides that stretches from Checheng on the west (台灣海峽, Taiwan Strait), toward the south (巴士海峽, Bashi Channel), and reaches the Jioupeng on the east coast (太平洋, Pacific Ocean). The coasts also consist of different characteristics – coral beach, coral cliff, white sand beach and rocky beach. You can enjoy all kind of water activities such as surfing on most of the beaches. Besides the seaside, there are many other activities like hiking, ecosystem discovery, bird watching, and geology exploring. Most people coming to Kenting will overlook the Kenting Forest Recreation Area (墾丁森林遊樂區) because it is before you enter the Kenting main street. It was a tropical botanical garden during the Japanese ruling era. It is worth a visit for those uplifted coral reefs, limestone caves and forests in the area. Most of the attractions are easily access with well-paved road.

If you have only one or two days in the area, you should prepare in advance or pay a visit to the Kenting National Park Tourist Information Center. There are more than two dozen sites listed on the map and it always felt like we didn't have enough time when we visited. Make sure visit the “must see” attractions first and reserve additional time for surprising bypass spots. You need to drive a car or rent an electric scooter (if you don’t mind getting sunburn) to visit this vast national park.
