Luray Caverns, Luray, VA, USA

I visited my brother many times in the past, and he believed that I must have already visited the famous Luray Caverns. Maybe because I visited him so many times, he never asked if I wanted to see Luray Caverns. I told him that I was not too old to remember where I have been before. This time he promised my wife and me a trip to see the huge underground caves. The drive took about 1.5 hours from Fairfax, Virginia; it was a pleasant journey, and we enjoyed the beautiful countryside during the trip there.

Luray Caverns is in the western Luray, Virginia. It was first discovered by Andrew Campbell with the help of a photographer on August 13, 1878. The ticket to visit Luray Caverns is US$24. It is not cheap, but it includes the Luray Caverns tour, a self-guided tour of the Car and Carriage Caravan, and access to the Luray Valley Museum. Luray Cavern tour is a guided tour, and it departs every 20 minutes starting at 9:00 am. You can find the details on their website. The tour lasts about an hour, and there is too much to see in such a short time. They turned off the lights sometimes to force us to follow the guide, which was really annoying and an unfortunate experience. Beside the mentioned nuisance, the caves were magnificent and showed us the power of nature. When a stalactite extending down from the ceiling meets a stalagmite growing up from the floor, a column or pillar is formed. The formation of the caves started 400 million years ago; we should continue to preserve it and educate our next generations - good results come a long way.

Besides the spectacular caves, this was the first time I tried the delicious homemade fudge from the Luray Fudge Company, and they still make the fudge from a 1830s recipe. It was a little bit too sweet, but we liked it.
