Pisa, Italy

Pisa is a city in Tuscany, Central Italy. It is well known for the Piazza del Duomo ("Cathedral Square") also known as Piazza dei Miracoli ("Square of Miracles").

The Piazza del Duomo consists of the Duomo (the Cathedral), the Baptistry and the Camposanto Monumentale. Pisa is famous because of the leaning tower - the bell tower of the cathedral.

To explore the wonders of Pisa’s Miracle Square, first we visited the Catherdral, then the Baptistery and lastly the Famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. The number of visitors allowed in the tower is very limited, and you need to book it in advance. Unfortunately, we could not enter the Pisan Romanesque style Cathedral and view the inside due to a special ceremony. We were able to visit the inside of the breathtaking circular Baptistery of St. John (Battistero di San Giovanni). The portal of the Baptistery has two beautiful crafted columns. Finally, we went to Camposanto Monumentale - an old monumental cemetery. You can see an enormous collection of Roman Sarcophagi inside the building. The walls were once covered in frescoes about Life and Death, but most of them were destroyed during World War II. Now you can see some of them restored at their original locations.

If you want to discover Pisa’s Miracle Square, you need to spare at least half a day there. You can spend an entire day to see not only the Miracle Square, but also the surroundings that contain more than 20 other historic churches and various bridges across the River Arno.

You should keep your shoulders and knees covered when entering religious buildings. Comfortable shoes, water and a hat are recommended.
