Amalfi Coast, Italy

This incredible coast is a must see when you visit southern Italy either by car or by boat. We chose the boat tour to see the Amalfi Coast (Costiera Amalfitana). It attracts thousands of travelers every year. I definitely will come back again and take a road trip to discover different facets of this stunning coast.

Amalfi Coast starts from Salerno and stretches almost to Positano in the southwestern region of Campania, Italy for about 40 Km. Amalfi Coast was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a cultural landscape in 1997. The weather is typical Mediterranean climate with warm summers and mild winters.

We started with one-hour bus ride to the town of Salerno. We were surprised to learn that this town was once the capital of Italy for a short period of time during World War II. We boarded a private motor at Salerno and enjoyed a 45-minutes scenic and relaxing excursion to Amalfi with view of the amazing cliffs along the coastline. You can see the unbelievable houses built on the edge of the cliff. There are several small towns and beaches on the coast. It is their tradition to have terrace houses with a variety of bright colors. It reflects their optimism and enjoyment of life. You can also see a number of abandoned bunkers that were once used to guard their country against intruders from the sea.

Amalfi was our destination of the boat tour. We enjoyed a narrated walk around the town center trying to learn its history and architecture. When you enter the town from the beach, you will notice the wide and steep, sixty-two steps leading up to the doors of Amalfi Cathedral. Amalfi was a very important trading city started in the year of 839 and lasted for about 350 years. Now it has become a very popular but expensive holiday destination.

Amalfi coast is known for its production of Limoncello liqueur. It is common to see lemons grown on trees in the terraced gardens along the coast between February and October. Amalfi is also well-known for the hand-made "bambagina" thick paper. The best time to visit is in spring or early autumn. Summer time is full of tourists and busy, and most of the coast is shutdown in winter.
