Chateau de Chantilly (香堤伊城堡) is located about 50 km (31 mi) north of Paris. It has an area of 115 hectares (284 acres). The grounds feature three gardens: a French-style garden, an Anglo-Chinese garden and an English garden. The site contains two attached buildings: the Petit Chateau which was built around 1560 and is owned by the Montmorency family, and the Grand Chateau which was destroyed during the French Revolution and rebuilt in 1875–1882 by Henri d'Orleans, duc d'Aumale. It is also close to the nearby Grand Stables - the largest stables in Europe. Musee Conde houses one of the finest collections of paintings in France. It specializes in French paintings and books from the 15th and 16th centuries.
This was the last attraction we visited in our 2016 April France trip. We did not realize that we had visited this beautiful chateau in November 2005 until we returned home from the trip and saved the photos to my server. It became cloudy when we drove through the country roads to the chateau. We parked near the entrance of the chateau because it was late in the afternoon around 5 pm and the low season. We learned that the Musee Conde inside the chateau was open until 6 pm. Therefore, we decide to skip the museum but purchased the grounds (gardens) ticket for 8€. The view from the entrance is fantastic; we saw the Chateau de Chantilly in front of us and the Great Stables on the far left. We went uphill to the chateau and took some photos before we went to the La Gerbe (fountain) and the English Garden. The English Garden is located between the Chateau and the Great Stables. It features “The Temple of Venus” and a small island, “The Island of Love”. We went inside the chateau to the famous Conde Museum we visited in 2005. It contains the second largest collection of antique paintings after the Louvre in its Art Galleries. We saw fine furniture and amazing decorations in the Large Suites and Private Suites. This was how the fabulously wealthy and powerful ancient nobles lived. Finally, we entered the Reading Room created by the Duke of Aumale. It was unusual to see such a large reading room in ancient buildings. You have to see it to believe its massive collections. When we visited in 2005, we had an option of having a boat tour in the Grand Canal.
You can visit the grounds with the mini-train or a golf cart for an extra charge. The chateau and the Great Stables were featured in the 1985 James Bond movie, A View to a Kill. More than 1/3 of the movie filmed here. We were lucky to visit this beautiful chateau in both autumn and spring.
