Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Rouen (魯昂聖母大教堂) is one of the great cathedrals of France like the ones we saw in Paris, Chartres, Remis during our April trip. The history of this site can be traced back to 4thcentury with the construction of a cathedral in the center of the city. After centuries of renovation and expanding, the Gothic style Cathédrale Notre-Dame is one of the largest ones in France today. During the 1890s, the famous painter Claude Monet painted a series of 30 paintings of the cathedral at different times of day and seasons.
We came to the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Rouen after we visited the Côte Sainte-Catherine. It is not so easy finding parking in the city center. After we managed to park on the main street, we went directly to the Rouen Normandie Tourisme & Congrès, which is located in front of the cathedral. The tourist center itself is a historical building. From the Place de la Cathédrale, we saw the amazing 61.6 m (202 ft) width west (northwest) facade with two impressive towers: Tour de Beurre and Tour Saint Romain. The west facade of the cathedral is the most beautiful and not so easy to take a photo with the spire unless you have a very wide-angle lens. It was also the richest and most refined facade among the cathedrals we visited in our trip. From the Rue du Change, you can see the south facade and the 151 m (495.4 ft) spire behind it. Once we entered the cathedral, we saw the beautiful four-storied nave with eleven clustered columns and ten arches on each side for a total length of 60 m (197 ft). The height to the vaults reaches 28 m (92 ft). The northern side aisle has 8 chapels, and the southern side aisle has 7. We found the 13thcentury old stained-glass windows of the church in the Saint-Sever chapel on northern side aisle. The 1956 great organ is situated above the main entrance and under the great rose window. One unique Gothic staircase, known as the “Librarians’ Stairs” located in the north transept, once led to the library and to the archives of the chapter. The 14 soaring pillars which extend on five spans choir of Rouen Cathedral are the most sacred part of the cathedral. The ambulatory contains the tombs of a few Dukes of Normandy. The Lady Chapel is situated in the apse which is an extension of the existing cathedral built in 1302. Behind the altar stands a large altarpiece of the 17th century which is dedicated to the Virgin. It is the most beautiful place in the cathedral.
We were so sorry to hear the tragedy of the terror attack in a church near Rouen recently. When we visited the cathedral, they displayed more than 20 large and small refurbished bells in the center of cathedral. It must be an unusual occasion not every visitor can see. You are allowed to take photos without using flash.
