Stanley, Hong Kong, China

Stanley (赤柱) is located on a peninsula at the southern most part of Hong Kong Island. The Cantonese name 赤柱 (red column) is based on the many cotton trees (Bombax ceiba 木棉樹) with red flowers hence called it red column. The English name Stanley was given by British Colonial Secretary, Lord Stanley, in the 19th century. The history of Stanley can be traced back to the Ming Dynasty (1573-1620). In the early 1960s, Stanley was a fishing port and an important typhoon shelter. Today it has become a popular destination for tourists and locals.

We took the Bus 973 from Tsim Sha Tsui East Bus Terminus (尖沙咀東總站) to Stanley. It took us around 80 min. with 56 stops in between. We went through some old town and modern high-rises especially when approaching the Repulse Bay (淺水灣). The view of the bay and beaches is beautiful. We might visit it later. After a long ride, we finally arrived in Stanley. There are many shops and street stalls selling souvenirs and a variety of apparel and accessories. You can also find many restaurants offering Chinese and Western foods. We spent some time here and bought some souvenirs. We followed the crowd and reached the Stanley Promenade (赤柱海濱長廊) where the Stanley Bay is right in front of you. We saw additional shops and restaurants along the beginning of the promenade. We ended up reaching the modern Stanley Plaza Square (赤柱廣場-天幕廣場). It is an outdoor open space where there are all kinds of activities. There was a concert when we visited, and we enjoyed the environment. You can also find restaurants, coffee shops and fast food here. We discovered an old Tin Hau Temple (天后古廟) at the far end of the plaza. Not so far from the Plaza Square is an old Victorian-era building – Murray House (美利樓). It was not originally located here but at business district of Central. Murray House was built in 1844 as officers' quarters of the Murray Barracks. The historical building was restored in 2001 and reopened in 2002. Today you can find shops and restaurants in Murray House. You can also visit nearby areas such as the Stanley Ma Hang Park (赤柱馬坑公園), beaches and hiking trails.

It is a nice place to visit and away from the busy downtown. Comfortable shoes are needed because you need to walk some distances. Hats and sunburn protection is required during sunny days because of the outdoor activities. Taking photos from the pier near Murray House is incredible.
