Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village (九族文化村, FACV) is located near the famous Sun Moon Lake (日月潭) in Nantou, Taiwan. It is a privately owned theme park established in 1986 by Jung-i Chang who wanted a place to preserve and teach new generations about Taiwanese aboriginal heritage. The 62 ha (153 acre) Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village has three main areas: Aboriginal Village Park (原住民部落區), Amusement Isle (歡樂世界) and European Garden (歐洲花園). The latest addition was the 1.877 km (1.166 mi) Sun Moon Lake Ropeway (日月潭纜車) completed in December 2009 which runs between Sun Moon Lake station (日月潭車站) and FACV station (九族文化村車站).
We visited Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village more than two times and took the ropeway twice. It was an incredible ride where we could overlook the Sun Moon Lake from above; it was a different experience to admire the lake. Once we got off the ropeway, we were in the Aboriginal Village Park. We saw recreated traditional houses like those used by different aboriginal tribes so we could learn about their culture and daily living. We also were greeted by their traditional performances and archery lessons. Do not forget to visit the Formosan Aboriginal Museum. The next attraction was the European Garden where we saw a beautiful Ritz Palace (麗宮), European Palace Garden, Roman Fountain, and Baroque Bell Tower. We also took the Miniature Train to enjoy the garden. If you are visiting in spring, you will be greeted by an array of cherry blossoms in the European Garden. The last spot is the amusement park that added in 1992. You can find “Caribbean Splash” for the family, “Maya Adventure” which is a suspended roller coaster that swings and sways as it makes its way through a series of twists and turns for adventurers, and the 85 m (279 ft) high “UFO Freefall”.
You can go to the Ritz Palace if you would like to have Chinese meal. Be sure to mark down the shows you want to see and plan your trip before wandering around the whole area. The Sun Moon Lake Ropeway has been upgrading its cable cars with transparent flooring since December 29, 2017. You can have a new experience of the exceptional panoramic view of the beautiful landscape.
If you really like to enjoy the nature and see the twinkling stars, then you can stay overnight at the lodge on-site. There are only 29 rooms and are very difficult to book. I believe you need to reserve at least half a day to enjoy the nature in Aowanda. You need to wear comfortable shoes, bring water with you and follow your mood to embrace the beauty of nature.
