Sorrento is a small town on the Sorrento Peninsula in southern Italy. It overlooks the bay of Naples. Sorrento is the gateway to the Capri - a popular destination for tourists, the beautiful Amalfi Coast & the Pompeii - a partially buried Roman town. The song “Come Back to Sorrento” is so popular that most people have heard it before but do not realize that it is from Sorrento.
Piazza Torquato Tasso is the heart of Sorrento. You can find a number of shops, restaurants and hotels. You can also easily find the street Via S. Cesareo. It is small, but if you are tempted to shop for souvenirs, characteristic curios, leather goods, clothes, silk and crafts, it is a great place to go. It is hard to believe this street was the central street of the Roman city of Sorrento in ancient times. Notturno Intarsio is famous for their beautiful inlaid woods. They can make tables, tea carts, pictures, and even music boxes. They have been in business for hundreds of years and have the best woodworkers around. You can even take the tour to find out how they make them. Another top souvenir from the area is limoncello, the signature lemon liqueur made from lemon rind.
There are numbers of restaurants that you should find time to enjoy. We went to Villa Rubinacci Restaurant. The indoor room with its elegant furniture as well as outdoor seating in the beautiful garden makes your meal enjoyable. They offer and reasonable prices delicious traditional local Sorrentina and Italian cuisine. We went there for the lunch; we were told that you need to wait for a long time for the dinner if you did not make reservation. La Basilica Restaurant Pizzeria is another one we went for lunch. It has outside seating, but it is hot during the summer. The inside of the pizzeria is cool and has a relaxing atmosphere. They offer excellent seafood and an extensive wine list of regional & national wines.
