Sagrada Família, Barcelona, Spain

Sagrada Família (Basílica i Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família) is one of the Antoni Gaudi's works and might be the most important master piece he left us. Hate it or love it; it is your preference. Personally I like it because someone was bold enough to try something so different. It looks like an amusement park if you never heard it before. The Neo-Gothic style, no firm plan and building as it goes make the project more difficult to complete. Gaudi was in charge of the construction from 1883 till his death in 1926; it was only less than a quarter of the project completed. With the help of modern technology, the projection of completing the construction is 2026 - the centennial of Gaudi's death.

Although the outside doesn’t look like an ordinary church, it's inside is magnificent. Sunlight coming through the windows makes the interior brighter than other churches. The central nave vault reaches forty-five meters while the height of the side nave vaults is thirty meters. Gaudi mimicked natural trees and branches to design the columns. You have to see it yourself to enjoy such a fine work. Of course, you can click the slideshow below to find some of it.

It opens at 9:00 am, and you should go there as earlier as possible to avoid the crowd. You need to pay extra 3.00€ to go to the tower by a lift. You can take photos inside the church but not using a tripod. If you plan to visit the tower, you can choose going up with a lift and down by the narrow spiral staircase. It is a must see when you visit Barcelona.

  1. Nobody knows when the construction will complete. It is still a nice place to visit.
